Used Cars Import Rules and Regulations in the Ireland

Age Limit

There is no age restriction for cars to be imported from Ireland to Japan.

Right-Hand Drive Vehicles

Ireland is a left-hand traffic country, which means that right-hand drive vehicles are allowed in the country. 

Inspection

Vehicles older than 4 years old entering Ireland should go through the National Car Test (NCT). This applies even if the vehicles have received any test abroad previously.

Import Duties and Taxes on Used Cars in Ireland

  • 10% custom duty is applied on the used vehicles 

  • A VAT of 21% is applied on the used vehicles 

  • Vehicle registration tax (VAT) is applied based on the automotive industry's open market selling price (OMSP). 

  • OMSP depends upon factors such as engine size, model, market value, roadworthiness condition, and year of the vehicle. 

  • Shipping is 700 to 900 Euros, depending upon the vehicle’s size

Documents Required for Import of Vehicle in Ireland

  • Original invoice - Provide evidence of payment of tax on the vehicle. 

  • The importer needs to complete a Declaration for Registration.

  • Irish customs form 1076

  • Original vehicle document with the engine, chassis number, and owner’s name
